Applications and Database Programmer:

Seeking a qualified intermediate/senior level Programmer to support the University of Chicago’s Institute for Genomics & Systems Biology. Candidate would be responsible for supporting existing research projects such as the 1000 Cancer Genomes Project and the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Consortium by updating/customizing software for current use. In addition the programmer would work directly with Institute faculty, staff and graduate students to develop, implement and document new software solutions for genomic analysis and database management. Applicant is expected to prioritize and manage workload to meet critical project milestones and deadlines and maintain the ability to work in a collaborative team environment while working independently. Weighting / Time of job expectations:
• 50% Perform statistical and scientific analysis of genetic data and manipulate data.
• 25% Develop software tools / database to facilitate analysis. Modify existing programming
  codes and run computer simulations.
• 10% Consult with faculty to determine database and software requirements for research projects.
• 5% Instruct lab personnel in the use of genetic analysis software.
• 5% Maintain accurate records of all activities in conjunction with research projects.
• 5% Attend and participate in research lab meetings.

Director of Research and Operations

The Director of Research and Operations, IGSB will plan, direct and manage the research and operational affairs of the Institute under the leadership of the Institute Director. Design, implement and promote Institute research including core facilities. Assist with grant and contract writing and development. Ensure the smooth functioning of Institute operational affairs. Serve as liaison between the Institute and various departmental administrative offices, Argonne National Laboratory, the Biological Sciences Division Dean’s Office and other University administrative offices as appropriate to the faculty composition and research goals of the Institute. In conjunction with the Institute Director, the Director of Research and Operations will determine budgetary constraints, parameters for financial expenditures and allocation of funds toward research projects and facilities operations. Manage activities related to Institute space, facilities, and equipment. Participate in the recruitment of faculty members. 

A doctoral degree in a field of study relevant to the research being conducted is required. A minimum five years of post-graduate research experience is required. Experience in a university is required.  Experience with grant writing and preparation is required. Experience managing research projects is preferred.  Familiarity with medical and scientific terminology, systems biology and genomics, and with computing and bioinformatics research is required. Negotiating, counseling, organizational and analytical skills are required. Excellent verbal and written communication is required. Strategic leadership and supervisory skills are required. Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures is required.

Since its establishment in July 2006, the Institute for Genomics & Systems Biology (IGSB) has been rapidly growing through the active recruitment of faculty and staff.  IGSB will house 9 to 10 core faculty members in genomics and systems biology at the University of Chicago and several scientists at Argonne National Laboratory. The Institute is also recruiting junior scientists and technical staff to fulfill IGSB mission goals.
